To transform a political party, you need a clear message, a broad electoral base, and allies within the existing power structure. Trump now has all three of these things. As I've pointed out before , his claim that Washington is broken and can only be fixed by an outsider resonates with many Americans, ladies fedora hat and not just arch-conservatives. Until recently, Trump's opponents, and skeptical conservative commentators, consoled themselves with the thought that, despite the enthusiasm of his core supporters, he would struggle to get more than a third of the Republican vote. Now this "low ceiling" theory looks tattered. In Nevada, Trump received almost forty-six per cent of the votes cast. Today, CNN published a national poll showing that forty-nine per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents backed him. (Rubio was in second place, with sixteen per cent of the vote, and Cruz was in third, with fifteen per cent.)
Trump would return to tax reform later - but first, he had to blame the media for "fomenting divisions" in the country, "trying to take away our history and our heritage" and "giving a platform to these hate groups." He called reporters "sick people" and "really, really dishonest" and accused them of turning "a blind eye" to gang violence, public school failures and "terrible, terrible trade deals."
But as much as populism was borne out of the economic and cultural dispossession of little people, rarely do we associate it with a particular subset of little people for whom populists seldom speak: ethnic minorities and African-Americans who, arguably, are and have been  the most economically and culturally dispossessed of all Americans, and who can certainly make an equal claim that they built this country and never got credit for it.Behavioral economics teaches us that people are far more motivated to avoid a loss than acquire a gain and invest far more emotion to prevent a loss than benefit from a gain which suggests that politicians who promise to reaffirm the status of erstwhile dominant constituencies will gain far more enthusiastic support than those who simply promise new and accessorize hats bigger programs to help people pursue their American dream . |
